INCITS/L8 is an INCITS Technical Committee that develops national and international standards for metadata and related technologies.  INCITS is an Accredited Standards Committee (accredited by ANSI) that develops a variety of information technology standards.

INCITS/L8 serves several purposes:

A forum for developing and maintaining US national standards (see also INCITS/L8 org chart).
The US TAG (Technical Advisory Group, also known as a "national committee") to several international standards committees.  US TAG committees formulate and represent US positions in international committees.  See US TAG responsibilities below (see also organization chart for international activities).

US TAG to ISO/IEC  JTC1  SC32  WG2  Metadata

INCITS/L8 is the US TAG to ISO/IEC JTC1 SC32 WG2 (Metadata).  INCITS/L8 participates in all development and maintenance activities of SC32/WG2.  INCITS/L8 makes recommendations to the JTC1 TAG on US positions regarding SC32/WG2.

US TAG to ISO/IEC  JTC1  SC22  WG11  Binding Techniques

INCITS/L8 is the US TAG to ISO/IEC JTC1 SC32 WG11 (Binding Techniques) for the ISO/IEC 11404 standard (General Purpose Datatype Specifications, formerly known as Language Independent Datatypes).  INCITS/L8 participates in the development and maintenance of the ISO/IEC 11404 standard and its revision.  INCITS/L8 makes recommendations to the JTC1 TAG on US positions regarding SC22/WG11.
